(Cold water) Swimming in Amsterdam
By Augusta Arron, Universiteit van Amsterdam, The Netherlands

Dive into the authentic Dutch experience
Amsterdam is known for it charming canals and vibrant city life, so of course, with time, locals have found a way to blend the two. Swimming allows you to experience the convenience of the city while enjoying its natural beauty, while also socialising and getting some exercise. These swimming spots offer a refreshing escape from student life and let you explore the city from a local’s view point.
I know what your’e thinking… are the canals actually clean enough to swim in? The answer is, on the whole, yes, but of course only in quieter areas away from busy boat routes and it’s not visibly dirty. These spots are not guaranteed to be safe from all nasties but as the Dutch say, ‘if its clean enough for the queen, its clean enough for me’, after the queen famously swam down the Amstel River a few years ago.
1. Marineterrein: She Spot For Sauna-ing And Socialising
Marineterrein hosts a large park and restaurant, being a well-known hang out spot for post-workers and general summertime liais-ers, with unique views of the grandeur VOC ship. The area is equipped with bathroom facilities and a grassy area where you can bring a picnic and some beers, chilling for a sunbathe between swimming. Also for braver souls, during the colder months the company, ‘Kuuma’ sets up temporary saunas around Amsterdam which you can rent out for an hour or so for up to 8 people or book individually. This is great to pair with a cold water swim! This picture is from when I had my family come visit- I don’t think they were my biggest fan after making them go!

2. Entrepotdok: The Central Spot With Its Own Kissing Bridge
Entrepotdok is located just east of the centre with 4 or 5 smaller wooden platform decks and ladders to dip into the canal. Near the historic Entrepotdok building and Zoo, the surrounding area is beautifully landscaped with plenty of greenery, providing a picturesque setting for your swim. There is also a brightly coloured yellow bridge popular for jumping off of (watch out for passing boats!). The nearby cafes such as ‘Gollem Aan Het Water’ offer a nice place to grab a bite and a vaasje of beer afterwards.

3. Park Somerlust: A Serene Parkside Pool
Park Somerlust is perhaps the greenest swimming experience I have had, right in the heart of the lush green Somerlust Park. This can also tend to be a little busier for picnics and summer sunset drinks, like Marineterein, so make sure to bring a picnic blanket and some snacks. You might even be able to share your time with some ducks.

4. Flevopark Public Pool
Flevopark Public Pool is a great spot for swimmers of all ages. Located in a little further out in East its outdoor pool is known for its clean facilities and family-friendly setting. I’ve not personally been here but it is the only pool I have heard about in the area if your’e a little afraid of the canal swim. Being in a park, I’m sure its perfect for lounging and picnicking, and there are often events and activities happening throughout the summer.
Swim like a local!
Living in Amsterdam it has become clear swimming is the normal thing to do in your spare time, whatever time of year. I also wanted to mention that there are plenty of opportunities to engage in it if you want to make a day out of it too, including SUP, which I did with mates and had a laugh doing, or the canal swim for charity in September. Make sure to give it a go!
