    Lessons From My Year Abroad

    September 3, 2025 /

Looking back on my year in Singapore, I honestly cannot believe how much I have grown and how many memories I have made. When I first boarded the plane, I knew it would be an exciting experience, but I do not think I realised just how amazing it would be. One of the biggest things I have gained is confidence. Moving to the other side of the world, starting fresh at a new university, and meeting so many new people felt daunting at first, but it quickly became exciting. I learned to say yes to opportunities, whether that was travelling to a new country for the weekend, joining in with…

    A Student’s Guide to Singapore

    September 3, 2025 /

Living in Singapore for a year was such a fun experience, and I would definitely say it is one of the best places to spend your exchange. It may be small, but there’s always something new to see or do, and I loved exploring all the different parts of the city. I thought I would put together a little guide of my favourite things in Singapore so that if you end up here, you will have plenty to keep you busy! One of my favourite activities was cycling from East Coast Beach all the way to Gardens by the Bay. You just rent a bike through an app, and the…

    Extra-Curricular Exploration

    September 3, 2025 /

Whilst on your year abroad, the best thing I could recommend would be to travel and do it as much as you can! Throughout the academic year at SMU I was able to travel to amazing places such as Japan, Borneo, South Korea and Thailand. I was able to experience a wide range of cultures and activities such as hiking a volcano in East Java and seeing wild orangutans in Borneo. However, the best decision I made was to continue the travelling once I had finished my academic year. The second semester at SMU will usually finish significantly earlier than your home university so take this opportunity to continue the…

    SMU: A Review

    May 27, 2025 /

By Courtney Blincow, Singapore Management University, Singapore It’s that time of the year again. All exams are complete and summer is approaching. Usually, this is my favourite time of year; the responsibilities of uni are gone and I can just focus on enjoying my time off. This year is different because, although I have no more academic stresses, I am being hit with the reality that my year abroad is over. SMU has been an amazing and exciting adventure that has consumed my life for the past year and the fact that I now have to say goodbye is crazy. Having spent so much time on campus and with the…

Tips for Island Hopping in the Philippines

    January 24, 2025 /

By Courtney Blincow, Singapore Management University, Singapore Having completed my first semester at Singapore Management University, my friends and I decided to book a 10 day trip island hopping around the Philippines. Surely when studying on an exchange year it is only right that we reward our hard work with a trip to a surrounding country, right? Well this is exactly what we did and 3 days after my final exam I was on a flight out of Changi Airport to Cebu City.

    Preparing for your Singapore Adventure

    August 16, 2024 /

By Courtney Blincow, Singapore Management University, Singapore Studying abroad can seem like an intimidating idea however, preparing for your exciting journey will make the process less daunting. When I was allocated my place at Singapore Management University I found that I was extremely nervous and unsure about what to expect. At this point I was aware that I needed to begin taking steps to get me ready for my trip but I had no idea where to start. My hope is that this blog post will be able to help you and provide tips that I would have found useful when I was in your position.

Here are photos from my end of year trip from Yosemite, Zion and Joshua Tree National Parks from our Global Ambassador Lucy 🧡 #uomgoabroad #globalambassador Some pics from our summer school students who are currently my in Bordeaux, France (yes, the summer school has its very own dog) ☀🇫🇷🥐 #uomgoabroad These are from my journey on the California Zephyr Amtrak train, from Chicago to San Francisco. The journey was 56 hours but the views of the Rockies and Sierra Nevada were incredible! It is a great trip to do to see more of the USA and also be more sustainable as your carbon emissions are much lower travelling by train compared to flying. - GA Lucy 🚉 #uom_goabroad #globalambassador The last year of my life without a doubt has been the most incredible. I met wonderful people, tasted things I couldn't have imagined and saw the most beautiful sights. Not only did I get to learn a language, but I got to learn about our amazing world and more importantly, Mexico. In my last few weeks, I had the privilege of continuing my travels within Mexico and getting to see how my friends from UDLAP grew up and the culture that raised them. With so many colours even in the streets, its no surprise my friends are so joyful. México, te extraño mucho <3 🇲🇽🧡 Sunny afternoon in Amsterdam - GA Lily ☀️🇳🇱 Go Abroad is hiring! 📣 Photos from our GA Kara's semester in New Zealand - featuring the Routeburn track! 🇳🇿 #uom_goabroad #globalambassador My friends and future Manchester housemates came to visit me from London. I showed them around New York City! Despite it being chilly we had a lot of fun!! GA Hannah 🗽 #uom_goabroad #globalambassador Pics from our GA Hannah - "I got to visit Chicago as a stop before heading back to London. I now know why they call it the windy city - even in May!" 🇺🇸 #uom_goabroad #globalambassador
