What to pack when moving to New Zealand

    May 20, 2026 /

Kara Dillon – The University of Otago, New Zealand With a reputation of being an over-packer, facing the challenge of packing my cases ready to embark on my journey to New Zealand, was not the easiest. However, now having lived here for a year, I have come to realise what was necessary to bring here… and what was not. Firstly, with New Zealand being a country with endless opportunities to travel, hike and camp, I thought it was necessary to bring my 75 Litre rucksack, my sleeping bag and my sleeping mat. Despite having used these, they took up a lot of space and weight in my suitcases. Little did…

Settling in at The University of Otago – the magic of UniFlats

    November 17, 2025 /

Kara Dillon – The University of Otago, New Zealand Moving so far away from home can be daunting in itself, but having to navigate a completely a new life and make new friends in an unfamiliar place can seem an even bigger and scarier challenge. However, my experience of moving to Dunedin and settling in at The University of Otago couldn’t have been any easier due to the help of UniFlats! UniFlats is the accommodation provider which most international students will use when coming to study abroad here at Otago. Not only do they provide fully furnished accommodation which includes kitchenware and bedding, but they also organise events throughout the…

Travelling Alone for the First Time

    October 8, 2025 /

Kara Dillon – University of Otago Whether you are a frequent traveller or never travelled before, flying or travelling alone can be a daunting experience. Before making my way across the world to begin my adventure here in Dunedin, New Zealand, I had never flown anywhere by myself. So, the initial thought of spending almost 40 hours travelling and navigating my way through three international airports, seemed almost impossible to me – especially as someone who usually relies on their family to lead the way on every holiday! Despite my fears and apprehensions, I did in fact make it all the way to New Zealand. Reflecting on my journey, it…

Amazing trip to Bali. Can’t wait to go back!! <3 - GA Alicia who's currently on exchange at HKUST #uomgoabroad #globalambassador "Here's the pictures from my most recent post on an average night in Canada. They show the northern lights which were usually visible from my school!" - GA Aleks 🇨🇦 #uomgoabroad #globalambassador Photos from GA Aleks' trip to Regina #uomgoabroad #globalambassador I visited Katsuoji Temple, known as the "Temple of Victory", in Minoh, Osaka for a field trip. There are thousands of Daruma dolls here left by visitors that represent perseverance and discipline against all odds. Would recommend for a day trip from Osaka city centre! - GA Gloria 🇯🇵 #uomgoabroad #globalambassador If you’re planning to visit the Go Abroad desk in the Atrium during exam season, please note we’ll be open Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 10am–4pm ⏰ During my exchange, I was lucky enough to be involved in Netball USA. Being involved in the US Netball Open in Texas and meeting lots of American and other international netballers! - GA Amy 🏀🇺🇸 #globalambassador #uom_goabroad Best part of living in New Jersey is the access to trains/buses into New York City. NYC is amazing all year round from the Rockefeller tree at Christmas to summer evenings on the Brooklyn Piers. There is truly a new part of the city to explore every visit! - GA Amy 🗽🇺🇸 #globalambassador #uom_goabroad Are you a first-year student thinking about doing a study abroad in your third-year? Here are our GGAs top tips to get ahead of planning your year abroad (trust us, you’ll thank yourself next year!) ✈️🌍 #uom_goabroad Photos from Shaw's recent geophysics field trip to Afton Canyon! ⛰️ #globalambassador #uom_goabroad
