    Accommodation at Stony Brook University

    June 18, 2025 /

By Rosie Atkinson, Stony Brook University, USA Accommodation whilst on a semester or year abroad is important as it serves as your temporary ‘home’ for several months. Before I arrived at Stony Brook, I didn’t know what to expect in terms of my accommodation, so hopefully this blog post can help other students going to Stony Brook University in the future. Costs The rent for my room was $6,831.00 for one semester. This was for a single room in West Apartments with 2 bathrooms shared between 6 people (including me). Food was not included in the price, but what was included in the cost of the accommodation was a cleaner…

    University Traditions: Roth Regatta

    May 5, 2025 /

By Rosie Atkinson, Stony Brook University, USA The Roth Regatta is an annual tradition at Stony Brook University held in either late April or early May in the Roth Pond on campus. It involves the production of either a Speedster boat or a Yacht boat made entirely out of cardboard, tape and paint. Teams of current students and alumni gather to make and decorate a boat to either compete with 4 rowers (yacht) or 2 rowers (speedster). Every year has a theme and this year for the 36th annual Roth Regatta the theme was Greek mythology. This year the international exchange students came together to make a boat. We nominated…

    The Costs of Studying Abroad

    March 7, 2025 /

By Rosie Atkinson, Stony Brook University, USA Engaging in a cultural exchange programme is a unique and exciting opportunity, although it is important to be prepared and organised, particularly regarding the costs of the experience. Upon signing up for a semester abroad in the United States, I felt as though I was naive to the costs that the programme would cost. As such, I have compiled a list of all the costs associated with my semester abroad at Stony Brook University, New York, United States, including the financial aid that I was lucky to receive. Note that the prices are likely to change over time so costs may be different…

Studying Abroad and the Fear of Missing Out

    February 13, 2025 /

By Rosie Atkinson, Stony Brook University, U.S.A Studying abroad in a foreign country is a life-changing experience as you meet new people, learn about new cultures and visit new places, but this can also come with the fear of missing out on what’s happening back home. I have been in the USA at Stony Brook University for almost a month now and have made new friends and took part in many different activities and trips, but I still face the fear of missing out on things back at home. The fear of uncertainty that you face in your new foreign country combined with the familiarity of what you are leaving…

Some pictures from the start of my second semester at ANU! I've had a wonderful time visiting a local vineyard, a sunflower maze, going in a hot air balloon at the Canberra balloon spectacular and watching the skyfire fireworks over lake burley griffin with friends :) - GA Lily 🎈🧡 #uom_goabroad #globalambassador Same thing. Said two ways. Both agree that you should apply now. #uom_goabroad Some of the fun activities and events that Rutgers has put on for free for all students! A stand-up set by Caleb Hearon, basketball games, a Coach pop-up event, a trip to see the New Jersey Devils play and a trip to the United Nations in New York! - GA Amy 🏀🇺🇸 #globalambassador #uom_goabroad My trip to New York in December, as a layover on my way home. I went to the top of the rock, watched a show, and visited the MET. For students on a travel grant especially, a long layover is a great way to see new places, especially if your journey home is as long as the one from Australia to the UK. - GA Lily ✈️🇺🇸 #uom_goabroad #globalambassador Scholarship opportunity for undergraduate students completing an international experience! Open to any student completing a study abroad, summer school, or a work, internship or traineeship placement in 2026 🌍 First snow in New Jersey, the east coast gets cold and new weather conditions is all part of the new experiences on exchange! - GA Amy ❄ #uom_goabroad #globalambassador I had an incredible time travelling up the east coast of Australia in December with another of the GAs, visiting the Gold Coast up to Magnetic Island. We had the chance to get up close to a Koala, but one leg of the journey was 17 hours by coach! - GA Lily 🇦🇺🐨🦘 #uom_goabroad #globalambassador GA Lily - My trip to Bangkok and Ho Chi Mihn City for my first semester break. It was a surprisingly easy and affordable trip from Australia, and well worth it for the night markets and food alone. 🧡 #uom_goabroad #globalambassador Want to capture memories of your study abroad whilst boosting your CV and enhancing your personal development - become a Global Ambassador❗️ Applications are open, find more info in our linktree (in our bio) 🧡 #uom_goabroad #globalambassador
