Differences between Manchester and Brisbane
by Ffion Davies, University of Queensland, Australia The first one is obvious – the weather! The weather really does influence your mood and helps to set up your day! It was nice waking up almost every morning to sunny, blue skies. Studying outside on university grounds or in a park with a coffee made it much more enjoyable. The locals were also very friendly and helpful. On many occasions when I was looking lost trying to navigate my way around the city or university campus, people would come up and ask if I needed help – which is rare in my experience in Manchester. Brisbane has a nice balance of…

Considering going abroad?
by Ffion Davies, University of Queensland, Australia Deciding to study abroad is a big decision! Choosing which country, city, or university, can be a little daunting. Sadly I’m at the end of my exchange year and have been exactly where you are. To put it simply, studying abroad was the best decision of my life and I would encourage anyone to do it! It’s really important you do as much research as you can on your options and your favourite destinations. It’s important to have a good idea of what to expect e.g., culture, the weather, uni: assessment types, teaching styles, etc. If you’re on the fence about going abroad,…

Time is flying!
by Ffion Davies, University of Queensland, Australia It’s already my first week back at uni after mid semester break of second semester!! I genuinely can’t believe how fast the time is going. I wish I could stop the clock and stay here forever! Over mid semester break I took a trip to the Gold Coast to visit a friend I made on my trip to Bali back in January. That’s one thing that is amazing about this experience is actually meeting up with people again that you’ve met along the way. The people I’ve met abroad are genuine and fabulous people. Many people I’ve met on my travels have made…

Summer break
by Ffion Davies, University of Queensland, Australia It’s summer break here at the moment. I’ve just come back from 3 weeks of travelling around New Zealand with my friends. It was so lovely after the stress of end of semester!! We started in the North Island and spent about a week there. We went to the Hobbiton film set, Waiotapu hot pools, did white water rafting and explored Auckland and Wellington. We then spent 2 weeks in the South Island where we hired a campervan to get around. This part of the trip included going to Mount Cook, the Franz Josef glacier, Lake Tekapo, Queenstown and so much more. New…

Life in Brisbane
By Ffion Davies, University of Queensland, Australia It’s been almost 3 months since I arrived in Australia and I can’t believe how quick the time has gone!! I can safely say that these 3 months have been some of the best of my life. Since my last blog, I have been on a trip to Byron Bay with QUEST (International exchange society) and it happened to be my birthday this weekend too! I had the best time. I’ve also been camping in North Stradbroke Island, where we saw loads of kangaroos and a koala, Moreton Island, as well as a trip to Noosa with the society. QUEST has given me…

Arriving down under
by Ffion Davies, University of Queensland, Australia I have always loved travelling and visiting new places, meeting new people etc, so the international exchange programme seemed perfect for me. Australia is a place I’ve always wanted to visit, from a very young age. I’m hoping to do some travelling during my time here. Queensland has some breath-taking beaches that I would love to visit. I also would love to go to other countries that are nearby such as New Zealand.
