Travelling Alone for the First Time

Kara Dillon – University of Otago

Whether you are a frequent traveller or never travelled before, flying or travelling alone can be a daunting experience. Before making my way across the world to begin my adventure here in Dunedin, New Zealand, I had never flown anywhere by myself. So, the initial thought of spending almost 40 hours travelling and navigating my way through three international airports, seemed almost impossible to me – especially as someone who usually relies on their family to lead the way on every holiday! Despite my fears and apprehensions, I did in fact make it all the way to New Zealand. Reflecting on my journey, it was never as bad as I had imagined, so here are a few tips I would give to anyone who is travelling alone for the first time – whether that’s 2 hours to Spain or 40 hours to New Zealand.

Be organised

There is nothing worse than turning up to the airport and having to rush around whilst rummaging around your bags trying to find all the documents that you need to be able check in. To avoid any added stress, keep all your documents with your passport in an envelope in a place which is easily accessible to you. It sounds like common sense, but it is easy to get caught up in the whirlwind of emotions when leaving home to begin your adventure abroad, so having everything you need in one place will minimise any additional stress when you arrive at the airport. Also, allowing yourself more time than you need is crucial. Check in and security queues are always unpredictable so allowing extra time will give you the opportunity to take your time and really take in the experience of travelling without having to worry about missing your flight! Personally, having 3 connecting flights sent me into a bit of a panic, but as long as you are as organised as you can be, the rest of the timings are out of your control – so focus on the journey one step at a time.

Make a good playlist

Personally, music is something which always helps me in stressful situations. Before my flight, I made a long playlist which I knew would bring the good vibes when I felt stressed or dealing with the emotions of leaving home. Whether its music, tv shows or even a book, having some form of entertainment with you can serve as a good distraction from any anxieties you may have when travelling. Especially when you’re by yourself it can feel lonely as well as stressful knowing you are in control of making sure you get from A to B, so having something to keep you busy is key!

Final thoughts

My final advice for travelling alone, is to just enjoy the process. This is the beginning of what should be one of the most exciting years of your life – so enjoy every minute! Also, if you are ever in doubt at any point, always know you can ask someone for help along the way. Believe me when I say I had to ask 3 different members of staff to find the right check in desk in Singapore Airport – that place is a maze!
