Travel While You Can: My Year-Abroad Adventures

    September 24, 2025 /

By Alex Toomey, Rutgers, USA One of the best parts of a year abroad is the freedom to explore. Rutgers’ location is perfect—you can hop on a train, book a budget flight, or pile into a car and see so many different sides of the U.S. I tried to say “yes” to every trip I could squeeze in between classes, and those journeys became some of my brightest memories. Here’s everywhere I went—and a few hacks to help you plan your own. Boston – 3 Days of New England Charm Boston was our first big getaway, and it ended up being more affordable than we’d imagined. We scored a $100…

A Look Back at Spring Break

    May 19, 2018 /

A highlight of my year abroad that I’m yet to blog about in detail was Spring Break. When it came to planning for this week, I was at a bit of a loose end. I hadn’t committed to any plans as most of my friends at McGill had long planned to go to Cuba. Having already been in December, I was keen to travel elsewhere in my precious week off. After a quick chat to a close friend on exchange at the University of Tennessee, I had a flight to Knoxville booked and my plan had been made. Knoxville, Asheville and Nashville… this trip couldn’t have sounded more American if…

Spring Break Travels (or Cuba: Fun yet Maddeningly Frustrating)

    April 8, 2016 /

By Elizabeth Pace (Chemistry, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, USA) “Fun but maddeningly frustrating” is the line used to describe Cuba on the back of the Lonely Planet Guide and by the end of our second day in the country, it had pretty much become our mantra for the trip. If you’d asked me a year ago where I thought I’d be spending my spring break while on exchange in the USA I’d probably have said Mexico, or Florida, or some other typical location known for its beaches and partying. Then one day someone mentioned off-hand, “Guys, wouldn’t it be hilarious if we went to Cuba for spring break?”. I’ll…

    Visiting Philadelphia

    April 16, 2014 /

By Hamish Russell (University of Massachusetts Amherst, USA). Spring break was a really nice change of pace for me; having already done the clubbing sort of holiday with my UK-based friends I was more interested in hearing the tales that others brought back, and staying clear of the fray myself. So, while many of my friends from UMass headed to Cancún for the week, I caught my flight from Boston to Philadelphia. As soon as I landed I was thrown into the culture of a new city, with new terms for seemingly trivial things replacing the new words I’ve become accustomed to while in Massachusetts. I was told off for…

Amazing trip to Bali. Can’t wait to go back!! <3 - GA Alicia who's currently on exchange at HKUST #uomgoabroad #globalambassador "Here's the pictures from my most recent post on an average night in Canada. They show the northern lights which were usually visible from my school!" - GA Aleks 🇨🇦 #uomgoabroad #globalambassador Photos from GA Aleks' trip to Regina #uomgoabroad #globalambassador I visited Katsuoji Temple, known as the "Temple of Victory", in Minoh, Osaka for a field trip. There are thousands of Daruma dolls here left by visitors that represent perseverance and discipline against all odds. Would recommend for a day trip from Osaka city centre! - GA Gloria 🇯🇵 #uomgoabroad #globalambassador If you’re planning to visit the Go Abroad desk in the Atrium during exam season, please note we’ll be open Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 10am–4pm ⏰ During my exchange, I was lucky enough to be involved in Netball USA. Being involved in the US Netball Open in Texas and meeting lots of American and other international netballers! - GA Amy 🏀🇺🇸 #globalambassador #uom_goabroad Best part of living in New Jersey is the access to trains/buses into New York City. NYC is amazing all year round from the Rockefeller tree at Christmas to summer evenings on the Brooklyn Piers. There is truly a new part of the city to explore every visit! - GA Amy 🗽🇺🇸 #globalambassador #uom_goabroad Are you a first-year student thinking about doing a study abroad in your third-year?
