Concrete Jungle + The Capitol (Trip to the States)

By Modinat Tijani, Queen’s University, Canada

For my February reading week, me and 5 friends (all of us coincidentally English international students) decided to do a trip to New York City and then Washington D.C.

New York felt absolutely unreal, just like in the movies and T.V shows I grew up on. We did most of the touristy stuff, like Brooklyn Bridge, Central Park, the view from the top of the Rockefeller Center. These are all pictured below! we also went to Times Square almost everyday. One thing I’d advise when going to NYC would be to budget!! NYC is veryyyy spenny and a way to reduce these would be to go in a slightly big group so accommodation is cheaper. There’s also cheap, $0.99 pizza (would not recommend eating everyday). We went to see a broadway show called Chicago, which was phenomenal and has made me love Broadway now.

We took the AmTrack to Washington D.C. which took about 5 hours due to a delay. When we were in D.C., the weather was great, especially for February, reaching about 25°C. We also did very touristy activities in D.C. This included: a tour of the capitol, the National Mall, Lincoln memorial.

One thing that stood out for me in D.C. was the NBA game we went to see, which was the New York Nicks Vs the Washington Wizards.
