The Best Food Spots in Milan

By Georgia Reid, Università Bocconi, Italy

Despite Italian cuisine being one of the best in the world, there are a lot of restaurants that are tourist traps, selling average meals. So, I have made a list of my favourite places to eat in Milan!

Re Fosco Bistrot

Re Fosco Bistrot is my favourite breakfast place to go to because their breakfasts are cheap and amazing. Their pancakes are incredible, priced around €6-7,50, but they have a wide range of choices, both sweet and savoury.

Green Mill

Conveniently located beside Bocconi, Green Mill is a student favourite, with their coffee and croissants under €3 combined, and even though they are priced low, they are so good!

Piz

Although it is located in a tourist area, Piz is without a doubt the best pizza restaurant in Milan. It only sells four types of pizza, but the quality is incredible, with prices under €10. They also tend to give out free shots and prosecco depending on what time you go. The restaurant is vibrant, with lots of decorations and designs on the walls, and music makes it a more enjoyable atmosphere. You will typically see queues outside it since you can’t book a table, but you never have to queue for long.

Ciao Pizza

Despite not being as good as Piz, Ciao Pizza is located beside one of the main shopping streets, selling large pizza slices for a couple of euros, which is perfect for a snack or for lunch. It is still very good, with large queues outside during peak times.

Trattoria Bolognese da Mauro

This is the most authentic Italian restaurant I have ever been to. Located slightly further out of the city, this little restaurant is owned by the friendliest Italian man who serves the most incredible pasta I have ever had. Their ‘trio of pasta’ is the best, allowing you to try three different pastas on the menu for only €15 per person, and they aren’t stingy with the portion size. Friends have also claimed his tiramisu as the best they have ever had. However, it does require a booking.

A’Vucciria

Located close to Bocconi, this little shop sells amazing Sicilian dishes, in particular their arancini for only a few euros. It is perfect for a light lunch or a little snack after a night on the canals, as it stays open late.

Piedra del Sol

Although it’s not Italian, I have to shout out this Mexican restaurant for when you get fed up with eating pizza and pasta. A bit on the pricier side, this restaurant serves the best Mexican dishes and a range of cocktails.

I hope that some of these recommendations will be of use during your stay (despite the pictures not being amazing), because finding high-quality, authentic restaurants can be difficult!
