Top Places to Visit Whilst on Exchange in Hong Kong

By Anna Belsham, Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hong Kong

Out of any place I have been to in my life, I would say that Hong Kong has the most things to do! From such a vibrant city full of museums, temples, parks, shopping, food, to endless beaches and hikes and even islands, it can become very overwhelming when you first arrive, it is hard to know where to begin. This blog post will hopefully give you somewhere to start, but there are still endless amounts of places in Hong Kong that are still on my list to go to, that are not included.

Temples & Parks etc:

  • Nan Lian Garden.
  • Big Buddha on Lantau Island- I would recommend getting the cable car here as it is such an amazing view. While you are up there there is also a trail called the wisdom walk and Po Lin Monastery. There is a village here with many restaurants and souvenir shops.
  • Chi Lin Nunnery.
  • Sik Sik Yuen Wong Tai Sin Temple- would recommend to visit during the mid Autumn festival at night.
  • Hong Kong Park.
  • Hong Kong Zoological and Botanical garden- amazing gardens and zoo animals to see.

Museums:

  • M+- There was a Guo Pei: Fashion Imagination exhibition on when I went, was very interesting and make sure you buy a student ticket.
  • Hong Kong Art Museum- free entry and great view of the harbour.

Others:

  • Lamma Island- great for a day trip just a £2 ferry there, I went to Lo So Shing Beach which was a short hike from ferry port. Would recommend going to Rainbow Seafood Restaurant which is by the ferry port and they give you a free ferry ride back to central. A very relaxing escape from the bustling city of Hong Kong.
  • Tram to Victoria Peak.
  • Mong Kok ladies markets- the whole Mong Kok area is also great to explore for food and shopping.
  • Repulse Bay Beach- so nice and very easy to get to.
  • Temple Street.
  • Dragon’s Back Hike.
  • Shek O Beach- takes longer to get to but feels like a tropical island.
