Diving into the Unknown – My First Impressions of Studying at NUS

Stepping off the plane in Singapore felt like entering a whole new world—lush greenery, stunning skyscrapers, and a humidity level that made me question my wardrobe choices. My first few weeks at the National University of Singapore (NUS) were a whirlwind of new experiences: adjusting to the fast-paced academic environment, exploring the hawker centres for the best laksa, and figuring out how to balance studies with the endless adventures the city had to offer.

Singapore is a confluence of cultures, and this diversity is evident in all facets of life at NUS. The campus functions as a city within a city, with cutting-edge facilities, student centres, and an atmosphere that perpetually stimulates innovation. One of my initial concerns was acclimating to the stringent academic framework. Lectures are immensely entertaining; nonetheless, they necessitate active participation, critical analysis, and autonomous investigation. I promptly observed that NUS students are not merely attending university; they are proactively sculpting their future.

In addition to academics, my early days were characterised by curiosity. From exploring Marina Bay Sands and Gardens by the Bay to traversing Chinatown and Little India, each facet of Singapore was a novel experience. The most advantageous aspect? The city is highly interconnected, facilitating seamless transitions from a tranquil study session at the library to an energetic evening on Clarke Quay.

This initial experience of NUS life was exhilarating yet also overpowering. Each difficulty presented an opportunity for learning, growth, and the acceptance of the unforeseen.
