A weekend in Aarhus
By Ellen Sleeuw, University of Copenhagen, Denmark
Aarhus is the second most populated city in Denmark, located on the Jutland peninsula’s east coast. Two friends and I decided to take the Flix Bus from Copenhagen for the weekend and I couldn’t recommend it more!
Saturday
We got the bus at 8:50am, which did mean an early rise in order to cycle over to the bus station with plenty of time. However, with the bus journey being 3.5 hours, an earlier bus was ideal!
When we arrived in Aarhus our stomachs were rumbling and fortunately there is food market, called ‘Aarhus Street Food’ located right next to the bus stop; this was perfect as it has so many different vendors, meaning everyone can find something they like. We headed to get some lunch and joined everyone else sat in the sun.
Happy and full, we walked over to ARoS Art Museum, this is known for the rainbow panorama sits on the top of the Gallery and has an amazing view over Aarhus, as well as many create exhibitions.

After quite a few hours in the gallery (it has lots of floors and of course we had to browse the gift shop!) we walked along the river for a bit and then sat in the sun for a bit in Mølleparken. Next to Mølleparken is Møllestien which is a pretty little street filled with colourful houses.

That evening we bought a picnic dinner from the supermarket and sat on a bench by the harbour to watch the sunset.

Sunday
We stayed the night at ‘Danhostel Aarhus City’, which was very central and really reasonable!
The sky was blue once again on Sunday, so we were up and out to take full advantage of it. This morning we wandered around Aarhus some more, making our way to Den Gamle By, which is an open-air Old Town museum. This was really fun and interactive, you got to walk in all the buildings that were depicting different eras and times, starting from 1864 until now. We also got to learn a lot about Danish history and culture (and got to try traditional rye porridge, not so sure on the texture!).
The old town is right next to the botanical gardens, so after this, we ate a picnic lunch in the gardens, laid in the sun and looked around the greenhouses.

Before we knew it, it was time to get the bus back to Copenhagen! If we had more time, it would have been fun to explore the coast a bit more and to go for a swim in the sea, but I suppose there’s always next time!
