What to Do in Austin, Texas
By Ava Griffiths, University of Wisconsin, Madison, USA
My friend and I headed to Austin, Texas for spring break, and we had a great time. It was a nice change to escape Wisconsin’s cold and enjoy the sunny 28°C weather. Austin is such a cool city, so I thought I’d share the best spots to check out if you ever find yourself in the Lone Star State.
Congress Avenue
This area is a historic district in Austin, perfect for shopping and grabbing a bite to eat. One spot you can’t miss is Guero’s Taco Bar, serving up delicious dishes that showcase Texas’ vibrant Mexican food scene. The area is also home to the iconic Allen’s Boot Shop, where you’ll find hundreds of cowboy boots, hats, and just about everything Western! When in Texas, right?

Rainey Street
This is a must-visit if you’re looking to experience live music in a vibrant, lively atmosphere. The bars and restaurants here are all converted bungalows, giving the area a unique, charming vibe that’s hard to miss. One place you absolutely have to try is Banger’s Sausage House and Beer Garden. It’s got a fantastic outdoor space where you can enjoy a cold beer while listening to live country music. Perfect for soaking in the true Austin experience!
Texas State Capitol
As the state capital of Texas, Austin is home to the impressive Texas State Capitol, and it would be a shame to miss a visit to this landmark. The Capitol offers free walking tours that take you through its grand architecture and provide a fascinating look into Texas’ rich history, from its early days as an independent republic to its role in shaping the nation. I highly recommend taking the time to explore and learn more about the state’s past. It’s definitely a must-see!

Barton Springs
Despite being a city, Austin has some pretty great nature spots. We took a 35-minute walk from downtown to Barton Springs, and it was totally worth it. The pool is spring-fed and stays at a chill 20°C all year round, making it the perfect place to cool off no matter the season. It is fed by the Edwards Aquifer, so the water’s super clear, and it’s a favorite hangout for both locals and visitors. Perfect spot to swim, relax, or just take in the scenery!

Texas Barbeque!
Look, you can’t go to Texas and not try the BBQ! It’s basically what the state is famous for. If you’re looking for the best, Franklin Barbecue is a must-try, it’s legendary. Texas BBQ is all about slow-cooked, smoky meats, with beef being the star of the show (especially brisket), but pork and chicken are also common. What really sets it apart is the way the meat is cooked: low and slow, over indirect heat using wood. It’s a true Texas experience that you can’t miss!
