Best Food Spots Near PolyU Halls

By Anna Belsham, Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hong Kong

One of the biggest adjustments when moving to Hong Kong was having to eat out for most meals. In Hong Kong the groceries are super expensive and at PolyU halls there are limited kitchen facilities, so it works out cheaper to eat out for most meals. There are 1000s of restaurants in Hong Kong and it can be overwhelming, after living in halls for a year I found some great nearby places to eat that are not too expensive. Here are a list of my favorites:

  • Genki Sushi: Japanese conveyor-belt sushi, my personal favorite and can get a membership which gives you discounts (wampoa one is closest).
  • Bafang Dumpling: dumplings and noodles. Just round the corner from halls. (1/2 price at lunch).
  • Ming Hing Shanxi Sliced Noodles: the nicest noodles and such big portions.
  • Jiu Fen Full: Taiwan Food.
  • Mammy Pancake: Hong Kong bubble waffles.
  • Sushi Express: take away sushi.
  • Lok Tin Cafe: Hong Kong-style cafe.
  • Rice Box: I am not 100% sure if that is what it is called as its in Cantonese. I is a takeaway on the corner of the street opposite McDonalds and bafang, you get rice a meat/fish/tofu and vegetables for £2.50 (the lady that works there is so sweet).
  • M&S Cafe: best place to go if you are missing food from home, there is one in Mong Kok (1 MTR away).
  • Fortune Metropolis Food Court: on way back from uni campus, has lots of good options.
    • Pepper Lunch: rice. veggies and meat.
    • Go Happy Veggie.
    • Burger Brothers: nice western food.
    • Ajisen Ramen: such good Japanese ramen.
  • PolyU Student Halls of Residence Canteen.
  • PolyU Campus: has so many great options, there is a list of them and where they are on the PolyU app.
  • Hong Kong Dim Sum: One Dim Sum & Dim Dim Sum, are in Mong Kok which is close and really good.

Myself and my roommate ate at home for breakfast as found that was easier. We shopped at nearby supermarket ParknShop.
