    The Journey of Making Friends

    February 1, 2024 /

by Alicja Banasiak, University of California Santa Cruz Coming to California for a whole year knowing no one and never even setting foot in the US before was a scary experience and although the journey wasn’t a straight forward one, I ended up having a cliché experience of making great friends and memories that I will cherish my whole life.

You can drive to the very top by car or bus or you can hike, entry into the observatory is free but any shows or presentations are extra cost. From the top you can see the Hollywood sign and the entire city of LA as well as mountains in the background.

Living in Santa Cruz, CA (Part 2)

    February 1, 2024 /

By Alicja Banasiak, University of California Santa Cruz, US In this part of living in Santa Cruz, I will discuss activities to do on campus and downtown, local wildlife and the International Living Centre on campus. In my first post I spoke about grocery shopping, money spending and saving, commented on the local weather and free student facilities at UCSC.

Living in Santa Cruz, CA (Part 1)

    February 1, 2024 /

By Alicja Banasiak, University of California Santa Cruz, US Studying in Santa Cruz is definitely different from Manchester! First of all, you are in a forest, surrounded by mountains with super fresh air. Despite the fact that the campus is open to the public, you see very few people from the public on campus. The campus isn’t located near Santa Cruz town (the town is about a 15-20 minute bus journey), which has its positives and negatives. The campus is quiet, full of wildlife, and has a unique student community. However, finding activities to do without a car and shopping for groceries is a little tricky. In this post I…

So What is California REALLY Like?

    January 12, 2024 /

Alicja Banasiak, University of California Santa Cruz, US Considering my limited knowledge on the lands across the Atlantic, I learned a lot from living here. First of all, California is nearly double the size of the UK which is crazy to me. I studied in Santa Cruz a small town below San Jose, quiet high up north located in a red wood forest near the coast.

Ending the year abroad in California!

    May 19, 2023 /

By Christevie Ngoma, University of Toronto, Canada Pre Holiday In January, me and my best friend (Danielle) from London (who did an exchange at McGill in Montreal) decided we needed one more holiday after New York to celebrate the end of our exchange! So we picked California, I have a close uncle in San Diego and my best friend has a close Aunt in Los Angeles. This meant we had free accommodation so we were saving over £1,000 not paying for a hotel. My flight from Toronto to San Diego with a return from LAX costs £374 with Air Canada, me and Danielle planned to meet in Chicago during a…

"My first two weeks in Perth! I’ve had a proper Aussie induction through AFL and rugby games, meeting a koala (and snake!) and decorating my own boomerang. Despite it being winter, I have also spent a lot of time by the sea, at Scarborough and Cottelsoe Beaches and visited Matilda Bay on Swan River (not even a 5 minute walk from campus). Through St Catherine’s College, I attended my first Formal Hall (the academic gown) and visited an incredible viewpoint overlooking the Perth skyline." from our GA Elizabeth in Australia 🐨🇦🇺🧡 #uomgoabroad #globalambassador A week in the life at our summer school in Siena ☀️🇮🇹🍕📚🍦🌅 #uom_goabroad Here are photos from my end of year trip from Yosemite, Zion and Joshua Tree National Parks from our Global Ambassador Lucy 🧡 #uomgoabroad #globalambassador Some pics from our summer school students who are currently my in Bordeaux, France (yes, the summer school has its very own dog) ☀🇫🇷🥐 #uomgoabroad These are from my journey on the California Zephyr Amtrak train, from Chicago to San Francisco. The journey was 56 hours but the views of the Rockies and Sierra Nevada were incredible! It is a great trip to do to see more of the USA and also be more sustainable as your carbon emissions are much lower travelling by train compared to flying. - GA Lucy 🚉 #uom_goabroad #globalambassador The last year of my life without a doubt has been the most incredible. I met wonderful people, tasted things I couldn't have imagined and saw the most beautiful sights. Not only did I get to learn a language, but I got to learn about our amazing world and more importantly, Mexico. In my last few weeks, I had the privilege of continuing my travels within Mexico and getting to see how my friends from UDLAP grew up and the culture that raised them. With so many colours even in the streets, its no surprise my friends are so joyful. México, te extraño mucho <3 🇲🇽🧡 Sunny afternoon in Amsterdam - GA Lily ☀️🇳🇱 Go Abroad is hiring! 📣 Photos from our GA Kara's semester in New Zealand - featuring the Routeburn track! 🇳🇿 #uom_goabroad #globalambassador
