Navigating the Skies: A Guide to Handling Long-Distance Flights
By Honor Cessford, Australian National University
Due to its gorgeous beaches, buzzing cities, and tropical climate, Australia was my dream study-abroad destination. However, this meant traveling to the other side of the world, which can be a bit of a challenge. Here are my top tips (learning from experience) to help make the lengthy journey as peaceful and enjoyable as possible.

Preparation is key! First, it is vital to make sure that you are prepared for the marathon in the sky. Double-check your passport, visa, health insurance, travel insurance, and other travel documents. Plus, don’t forget to pack a power adaptor; lots of countries, including Australia, have their own unique plugs, and it would be a disaster if you couldn’t charge your electronics upon arrival!
Choose your airline and layover destination wisely! Long-haul flights to Australia and other countries often include layovers. I would strongly advise you to choose an airline that transfers your bags over during the layover. Having to collect and re-check bags is unnecessary stress and often requires a longer period. Further to this, I had a 9-hour layover overnight, which didn’t allow me to explore at all. It would be worthwhile considering your time of flight. Don’t forget to check whether a visa is needed for your layover destination!
Time Travel Magic! Get ahead of the time-difference game. Adjust your watch to your country’s time as soon as you board the plane, and try to sleep according to your destination’s time zone. This really helps minimise jet lag once you land.

Bring your own sources of entertainment! Load your devices with movies, TV shows, and music. On one of my 16-hour flights, my inflight entertainment system did not work, and all I was offered was an inflight shopping magazine (top tip: don’t fly with Air India!).
Dress for comfort! Airport fit checks are common on social media, but when you are traveling for over 24 hours, comfort is key. Due to delays, my journey to Australia took over 48 hours, and I was so grateful to be wearing comfortable clothes. It is also advisable to take a small wash bag and a towel in your hand luggage. We had a 10-hour delay at Melbourne Airport before flying to Canberra, and we were able to use the showers! Remember a neck pillow – it really is a game-changer for a good nap.
Plan for Jet Lag Recovery: When arriving at your destination, resist the urge to nap. Stay active, meet new friends, and power through until local bedtime to help you recover from jet lag faster.
I landed in Australia the evening before my 20th birthday and by forcing myself to stay up I met some amazing friends who organised a birthday get together for me, enabling me to meet so many new friends!

Capture the Journey! Remember to take lots of photographs to document your journey. These photos will capture all the emotions you were feeling when embarking on your once-in-a-lifetime adventure and will be great memories to look back on.
Hopefully, these tips will help you travel in comfort! Remember to enjoy the nerves and excitement. This is the start of your amazing adventure!
