Fraser Island and Carlos Sand Blow
by Mia Campbell, University of New South Wales, Australia
Before we ferried across to Fraser Island at Airlie beach, we visited Carlos Sand blow. This was a depressed sand landscape, where either side was elevated vegetation, where the sandblow acted as a wind tunnel causing this depression. I do apologise that right there is my inner Geographer coming out! Here, we watched the sunset with some ‘tinnies’ sitting on the sunset for my friend’s end of her birthday.
How many people can say they have done that for their 21st? The following day we road across the sand dunes where we visited Eli Creek and Lake McKenzie as well as the sand dunes where our group, or more honestly put me and one other, did rolling races down the sand dunes into the lake. It became clear to me quickly, why the others decided to cheer us on instead of participating. Even with several washes, sand remained in every crevis of my body for the following 3 days! This reminds me of the evening activity of hosing one another down in our camp, which camp was evidently very basic but had undeniable character.
