A guide to Amsterdam in the Summer
By Rose Vollum, University of Amsterdam, Netherlands
Given that good weather is such a rarity in Amsterdam, it can be tough to know what to do when the sun finally arrives. After our recent heatwave, I thought it might be useful to compile a guide to the best spots to visit when it’s hot!
1. Nemo Maritime

If you’re looking for a bustling place to swim and sunbathe, Nemo is the place for you! It’s located right by Amsterdam Central Station and boasts several grassy areas where you can lie out in the sun. Nemo has a lovely, relaxed vibe. In the summer, there are lots of groups chilling, listening to music, and there’s even a café that sells ice cream. The water is great for cooling off, and if you are feeling brave, there are a couple of platforms you can jump off! On a really hot day, the area can get a bit crowded, so I’d suggest getting there early to secure a good spot.
2. Spakleweg

If you’re after somewhere a bit more off the beaten track, Spakleweg offers similar vibes and is much less crowded. I’m always a fan of going here as it’s a lot closer to me than Nemo! The atmosphere is more relaxed, and the water feels cleaner, although it is a bit harder to access as the steps can be slippery. In the winter, visiting here for a cold plunge is also great; just be prepared for a chilly cycle home.
3. Go on a cycling day trip

A scenic bike ride is a fantastic way to spend a sunny day! It’s also a great way to explore new parts of the Netherlands. Last week we cycled to Brork in Waterland, a very picturesque village surrounded by a lake. The ride took around 40 minutes and was mostly through country fields. It well showcased the Netherlands’ flat landscape as we didn’t see a hill the entire way! I’d recommend bringing a picnic, but there’s also a cute cafe Ijscafe Antonio, in the village. Other nice places to visit are Volendam and Haarlem.
4. Grab a refreshing drink
As we all know, staying hydrated in the summer is essential! Fortunately, there are plenty of nice spots in Amsterdam to grab a drink post-swim or cycle I’d highly recommend checking out De Gooyer Molen, a brewery along the canal right next to a windmill. It has a lovely outside area and serves some delectable traditional Dutch snacks. Gollem Aan Water, next to the zoo, and Café P96, which has a boat terrace, are two more lovely canal-side locations!
5. Have a picnic in the park

There are many fantastic parks across Amsterdam for a picnic. My personal favourites are Oosterpark and Park Frankendael! They feel a lot less touristy than Vondelpark and have nice spots where you can sit by the water. In addition, they are both close to a Lidl, where you can pick up all the essential snacks.
