Hainan Island – A Trip to China

By Ruohan Zhang, National University of Singapore, Asia

A trip to the south of China – Hainan Island

Hainan Island is the only province in China that is entirely located in the tropics, and as I grown up in the North of China, the culture and food is very different from what I’ve used to and it’s really close to Singapore as well (only 3 hours flight!)

I went to Haikou and Wanning instead of the more popular destination like Sanya. If you want to go for the beaches, then go for Sanya.

Recommendations and Experience of Attractions~

Qilou Old Street – The old street is mainly a combination of shops and restaurants, the buildings are very old fashioned and great for photos!! There are also photo studio that offers Chinese triditional cloths rental and photo services if you are interested.

There is also a shop offering post card mailing services, but I don’t remember the name, it’s a cafe on that street, with souvenirs for sell in the shop.

Hainan Museum – This museum is mostly on history of Hainan Island and other cultural stories and history, the museum is free of charge but you will need to make a reservation before going.

I’ve also went to Jiari beach and Haikou Botanic Garden, which I think it’s a great place to go for relaxing and jogging.

I think Hainan is a great place for relaxing and holidays, hope you guys can get the chance to visit.

Note: when going to China, do remember to make your plan as apps like google and instagram won’t work in China.
