Why Singapore? Why Asia? Travelling Beyond the National University of Singapore.
By Khay Muhammed, The National University of Singapore, Singapore
When I chose Singapore as my first choice for my year abroad, it wasn’t just about studying at a prestigious institution. It was about the opportunity to explore the vibrant and diverse continent of Asia throughout the academic year. Now, three months into my term at The National University of Singapore, I’ve been fortunate enough to travel to several incredible countries, including the Philippines (twice!), South Korea, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Thailand, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, and of course, explore the many facets of Singapore itself.
Each destination has offered its own unique experiences, from the vibrant streets of Seoul to the beautiful canyons in Cebu, all contributing to a deeper understanding of the culture, history, and vibrancy of Asia. Words cannot fully capture the beauty of these countries—or the richness of their cuisines. No photo, video, or description can do them justice; some things simply have to be experienced first-hand. The chance to explore Asia with Singapore as my home base has been truly transformative, giving me opportunity to make invaluable memories that I will carry with me for a lifetime. I’m grateful to have started my 20s studying at one of the world’s top universities, the National University of Singapore, while traveling across Asia, immersing myself in one country after another.
My advice to anyone selecting their destination for a year abroad is to look beyond the classroom. Consider the opportunities that await outside of your weekly lectures—what experiences will shape your personal growth, your travels, and your future? Singapore is an incredible choice, and I can’t recommend it enough. With its world-class institution, year-round sun (permanent tan!), and endless travel opportunities, it truly speaks for itself.
