Mitacs: Summer Research at UBC, Canada

by Kevin Shi

This summer, I had the privilege of interning at the University of British Columbia, Okanagan (UBCO) under the mentorship of Dr. Sumi Siddiqua through the fully funded MITACS program while following PhD candidate Shayan Narani. My research focused on understanding the influence of water content and superplasticizer on geopolymers made from blast furnace slag and wood fly ash—sustainable alternatives to traditional cement that help reduce the carbon footprint of the construction industry.

The project’s goal was to optimize the mechanical properties and workability of these geopolymers by adjusting water content and superplasticizer dosage. Water is a critical factor in the strength and durability of geopolymers, as too much can weaken the structure, while too little makes the mixture difficult to work with. Superplasticizers are chemical additives that improve flowability without increasing water content, striking a balance between strength and workability. My research involved testing different geopolymer mixtures to measure compressive strength, setting time, and flow characteristics. These experiments helped me develop a better understanding of the interplay between water, additives, and material performance, which is key to creating more efficient and eco-friendly construction materials.

Throughout the process, I was fortunate to have Dr. Siddiqua’s and Shayan’s guidance. They not only helped me navigate the technical challenges but also encouraged me to think critically and approach problems creatively. This hands-on experience significantly deepened my knowledge of material science and engineering.

While the academic aspect of the internship was rewarding, I also made sure to enjoy my time in Kelowna, a city known for its natural beauty and outdoor activities. On weekends, I explored various local attractions, including mini golf, where my friends and I would spend hours competing in a fun and relaxed setting. I also frequented a nearby bowling alley, where we had plenty of laughs and friendly competition. Furthermore, I did take a trip to Vancouver to experience the city life and went to the aquarium, visited the Capilano Suspension Bridge, and had some very delicious food.

One of my favourite activities was playing beach volleyball along the shores of Okanagan Lake and indoor volleyball with new friends in Canada. The stunning scenery, combined with warm weather, made it an ideal spot for outdoor fun. Whether I was playing volleyball, swimming in the lake, or simply lounging by the water, the beach became a place to unwind and recharge after a week in the lab. As a bonus, I also bumped into an old classmate from my old school in Singapore who was studying there as an undergraduate student!

Overall, my MITACS internship at UBCO was an enriching experience that blended academic growth with personal enjoyment. I gained valuable research skills and insights into sustainable construction materials while also exploring the beautiful city of Kelowna. This summer solidified my passion for material science and the importance of maintaining a balance between work and leisure.
