Living in Santa Cruz, CA (Part 1)
By Alicja Banasiak, University of California Santa Cruz, US Studying in Santa Cruz is definitely different from Manchester! First of all, you are in a forest, surrounded by mountains with super fresh air. Despite the fact that the campus is open to the public, you see very few people from the public on campus. The campus isn’t located near Santa Cruz town (the town is about a 15-20 minute bus journey), which has its positives and negatives. The campus is quiet, full of wildlife, and has a unique student community. However, finding activities to do without a car and shopping for groceries is a little tricky. In this post I…

So What is California REALLY Like?
Alicja Banasiak, University of California Santa Cruz, US Considering my limited knowledge on the lands across the Atlantic, I learned a lot from living here. First of all, California is nearly double the size of the UK which is crazy to me. I studied in Santa Cruz a small town below San Jose, quiet high up north located in a red wood forest near the coast.

A New Chapter: Tales of a Mancunian Lost in the City of Angels
By David Sustana, University of Southern California, United States Things have been crazy since I last wrote. First of all, if you’ve been keeping up with the blog, then you’d probably know that I was scheduled to go on a trip with the SC Outfitters society to California’s famous Salton Sea. Unfortunately, I don’t have any updates or pictures to share of that because it was cancelled at the last minute. However, it is being rescheduled for a future date, so stay tuned and hopefully I will have more to share about that coming up! But besides that, things have been busy. I got to celebrate a very American Thanksgiving…

California Dreamin’: Tales of a Mancunian Lost in the City of Angels
By David Sustana, University of Southern California, United States Arrival and First Impressions Wow, what a whirlwind it’s been! As I’m writing this, I feel like I have finally and truly ‘landed’ in Los Angeles and found my niche. Everything has just been incredible here. The food. The weather. The atmosphere in LA and on campus. And that last part particularly has been consistent throughout my entire time here so far. From the moment I stepped onto campus, everyone has been welcoming and has helped to make this experience what it has been for me so far. Although I should note that I actually started my California Dreamin’ journey in…

Going Abroad? But what about your significant other!
By Alicja Banasiak, University of California Santa Cruz, US Can a long-distance relationship work? Well, I’d say yes. Before coming to the US, I was dating my boyfriend for a couple of months. We entered the relationship knowing that I was going to study abroad the following year.

A Locals Guide to a Colorado Snow Storm
By Lara Bradley, The University of Colorado, Boulder, USA The weather in Boulder, Colorado is insane. When I first arrived, the sun was blazing and temperatures hit well over 30° for weeks- and I had packed only one pair of shorts. Fast forward 2 months later, and the first snow storm hits. These storms are intense- heavy snow for hours, strong winds, and temperatures that dip below -20°. Generally, these winter storms leave Boulder with 6-10 inches of snow. After spending 2 years in Manchester, I did not come to Colorado prepared for the snow- but now, I’m basically an expert. So without further ado, here is a locals guide…
